MANILA, Philippines - Mayors on Thursday urged President Benigno Aquino III to expand and adopt the KALAHI-CIDSS community-driven development (CCD) strategy as a national program.
In a resolution presented to the President by mayors from different parts of the country, local leaders urged Malacañang to scale up the KALAHAI-CIDDS project "to be able to reach at least 50 percent of the municipalities in the poorest provinces in the country and thereby forge a stronger partnerships between citizens, local government unites, and national government agencies in reducing poverty."
Social Welfare Secretary Dinky Soliman said the President is amenable to the idea, adding that the proposal will be studied by the human development cluster of the Cabinet.
"Ang sabi niya [Pangulo] sa akin, in principle, wala naman siyang nakikitang problema, kailangan namin detalyehin ang ibig sabihin nito kung gagawing national strategy. So kailangan kaming mag-translate into a more detailed program para sa pambansang pamahalaan na implentasyon," Soliman told reporters.
KALAHI-CIDSS involves the building of small-scale infrastructure and implementation of social and economic activities after communities identify and propose development projects.
The Millennium Challenge Corporation recently gave a grant to the Philippines for KALAHI-CIDSS.
